Information for September 2020

Dear Parents/Carers

We are so pleased that we are finally able to welcome all pupils back into school from September.  Unfortunately school will not be exactly as it was before lockdown commenced. For those pupils who have attended during lockdown the processes and procedures will be very similar to those currently in place. All schools have guidance to follow that sets out the expectations of them. We have been busy planning at St Mary’s for a smooth start to the year.  The procedures being put in place are to keep everyone in our school community safe and must be adhered to. We appreciate your support at this time to keep everyone safe and well. There is a lot of information to digest but please do read this letter to the end to ensure that you are well informed.

From September the expectation from the government is that all children will return to school. Schools will be expected to resume the processes involved in following up on absences and imposing fines where necessary.  Children should NOT attend school if they are exhibiting any symptom of Co-Vid19. School meals will be available and FSM vouchers will cease.  Universal FSM will resume.  In the first instance, school meals will be in the form of a packed lunch. We hope to reintroduce cooked meals at a later date, but due to space restrictions in the hall this may not be possible.  School will keep you informed as and when of any changes.

Children will remain in pods and pods will not mix, in the vast majority of cases pods will be classes but in year 6 the year group will be a pod in order to ensure that the usual year 6 booster groups can continue.  This enables us to have clear contact history to support the NHS track and Trace system. This means that there will not be daily collective worship in the hall and that lunchtimes will be affected.  Lunchtime and collective worship will initially be held in classrooms. Playtimes will be staggered and zoned to ensure that pods do not mix. The start and end of the school day will be staggered in order to avoid mass gatherings in the playground.  Children will not be socially distanced within pods, as per guidance, but will be all sat facing the front to avoid prolonged face to face contact.

Children are expected to wear school uniform from the first day back along with appropriate school shoes.  The exception to this rule will be days on which children have PE, children will come to school in PE kit on these days – school colours please. There will be no PE lessons in the first week back; we will upload your child’s PE day/s to the school website in September, so that you know which days to send children in kit. Please note that in order to adhere to guidance PE lessons will usually be taken outdoors and as such children will need kit appropriate to the outdoors.

Children will be expected to use hand sanitiser on the way into the school building and to wash their hands upon arrival to the classroom.  Hand sanitiser and hand washing facilities are available in every classroom and children will be asked to wash their hands more regularly than usual.  The same health hygiene measures will be expected as we had in place prior to lock down e.g. catch it, bin it, kill it. Hand washing posters are in place to support rigorous handwashing. There is no need for children to wear face coverings in school; if children wear masks on the journey to school they should be removed before entering the school building and either given to parents to take home or placed in a plastic bag and tied until home time.

We ask that children do not bring lots of personal belongings into school.  Children should only come equipped with their water bottle and lunch bag, if they are bringing lunch from home, along with their coat. There is no need for bags, pencil case etc. and we ask that these are kept at home. Children will be provided with their own pencil, ruler etc.

Unfortunately due to the limitations of the guidance, staffing and space we are not able to offer before and after school in the first instance. This will be reviewed as guidance relaxes. We are aware that many of you rely on this childcare but we are not yet able to offer this service safely.

The school day will be staggered from September in order to reduce congestion.  Times should be adhered to in order to avoid cross over and congestion. Classes should arrive as follows;

Government guidance is due to be reviewed on 11th August 2020 and in the event that guidance changes any necessary amendments will be posted on our website.  Please do check the website regularly after that date.

All children, with the exception of the Early Years classes, return to school on Thursday 3rd September 2020.  Until then please have a safe and happy summer.

Yours sincerely

Mrs Booker
